Hundreds of art enthusiasts have already visited the temporary gallery set up in Dunfermline’s Kingsgate Shopping Centre, thanks to the Art in Shop Windows initiative.
The creative initiative, which brings art to the community, has also transformed a number of unused shop fronts in the town centre with innovative works of art. The shop windows were unveiled earlier this month with artists talking about the inspiration behind the designs during a tour of the art trail. The gallery space opened on Monday 5th July.
The initiative will continue to run for the next few weeks until 15th August. The project, spearheaded by Fife Council’s Development Services working in partnership with local professional artists, is also funded through the Celebrating Fife 2010 year-long programme of events. The specially commissioned art works have been produced by Dunfermline based artists Contemporary Art Dunfermline (CAD), who are also managing the gallery space.
Members of the public can visit the gallery, located in the former Adams store, to view the artworks and meet with the artists daily between 10 am and 4 pm. Artists will be working throughout the available space and the public will have opportunities to meet them, view their work and even produce some work of their own if they wish. A series of art workshops have also been running in Abbot House.
The aim of the initiative is to enthuse and inspire communities, schools and visitors. The project hopes to bring a new form of vibrancy to the heart of the town, rejuvenate the high street and provide an interesting talking point.
An ‘Art Trail’ leaflet promotes the initiative and provides a map and information on the window displays will be available from the gallery space, as well as various community venues.

Culture has a unique ability to lift people and places and we are pleased this is being achieved through the initiative.”
