Carved cross on wall on medieval pilgrim route to Dunfermline
Eagle-eyed Roger Pickering, of Dunfermline based Forth Pilgrim, discovered a carved cross in a wall on the old pilgrim road to Dunfermline coming from the west. Roger was leading the first in a series of guided walks as part of Celebrating Fife 2010.
Roger explained the potential significance of this discovery: “In the context of the history of this ancient road we are very excited about this. As our theme was to look at both the medieval roads, and the early rail and wagon ways still existing in the fields just west of Dunfermline, it is a very timely find”.
“We have been in touch with Fife Council’s archaeologist, Douglas Speirs, who thinks that possibly a medieval stone has been re-used in what looks like a late 18th century wall built around the time this section of road went out of use”.
Details of the find have been passed to Historic Scotland and other interested parties locally to share information and knowledge.
Roger Pickering hopes this discovery might spark new interest in walking between Pilgrim sites and commented: “It’s great that funding from Celebrating Fife 2010 has enabled Forth Pilgrim and Scotways to generate these guided historical walks for the general public”.
Louise Trow, Cultural Co-ordinator for South West Fife, said: "Celebrating Fife 2010 is happy to be supporting both Scotways and Forth Pilgrim for their historical guided walks which have included events in Aberdour, Culross and Dunfermline. So far the walks have been very successful and this discovery highlights the many hidden gems still to be found in Fife".
Forth Pilgrim, in partnership with Scotways and Heritage Paths, aim to get people of all ages out and active in the fresh air, exploring Scotland’s rich heritage and bringing history alive by walking where it all took place.
