GB Deaf Swim Team Dortmund
Young Fife Swimmer Rises to the Challenge
The Great Britain Deaf Swimming Team returned recently from the European Championships in Dortmund and for Lucy Walkup from Auchmuty HS it was her first taste of International competition and she rose to the challenge. World deaf swimming is of a very high standard and the young Glenrothes SC swimmer was up against older and much more experienced competitors. Lucy was one of three Scots in the GB team of twelve, the others were Euan Cheyne (Aberdeen Univ) and Jack McComish (Lanark). Martin Lee from Cupar, one of Scotand’s most successful deaf swimmers, travelled as a support coach.
Lucy was financially supported by a large number of local individuals and organisations in her quest for international honours. She has gained enormous experience at her first international and it has made her all the more determined to train even harder in her efforts to secure a place in the GB team for the World Championships in Portugal in 2011.
As expected the young Disability Sport Fife member recorded her best times in backstroke and breaststroke. 01:23.49 was her best performance for 100 metres backstroke in achieving a fifth place finish in the final and 00:38.48 was her best time for 50 metres backstroke and an eighth place. In the final of 100 metres breaststroke she recorded 01:28.42 and finished seventh in the final. Lucy swam a full programme of events and contributed considerably to a top GB performance. Jack McComish from Lanark won bronze in 4 x 200 metres freestyle relay and capped off a great championships with another bronze in 100 metres breaststroke. In addition there was one Scottish record, 14 GB age group records and 51 personal best times out of 99 events contested.
Well done to the GB team and congratulations to the young Scots who have experienced their first but certainly not their last international swimming competition.
